The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games could go open source |
|
Under the guidance of subcontractors including Hewlett-Packard and IBM, Atos Origin, which is the technology partner of International Olympic Committee, recommend the open-source technology platform for the The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. IOC will consider whether 2008 Olympics could switch to open source and then the committee will make the final decision.
Claude Philipps, who is program director at Atos Origin, said that they had a plan to propose this for Beijing and added that it would save money on the licenses. On the other hand, the open-source move could be hindered by support costs. As Claude Philipps said: "The issue might be support because, especially in China, you don't have all the companies we have in Europe and the U.S." Moreover, the IT behind the Olympics consists of a huge operation involving some 1,200 IT team members, including 800 volunteers, who run 450 Intel-based servers and Unix boxes, 4,700 PCs and 700 printers. |
