Google plans to hire programmers to help OpenOffice |
Google's hiring programmers to improve OpenOffice demonstrates its affinity for open source initiatives. OpenOffice.org is an open-source software suite that competes with Microsoft's Office.
OpenOffice takes its basis from Sun Microsystems' starOffice suite of programs. Sun Microsystem has turned OpenOffice into an open-source project five years ago. But, rival Microsoft's Office has recently paid serious attention to OpenOffice. Google now thinks that it can help OpenOffice. As a result, Google's ties to open-source development is strengthened. Behind this move, there are also business reasons which justify Google's help. |
